The Godzilla event in Fortnite is better than Warzone’s and not even close.

Fortnite’s Godzilla event throws Operation Monarch from CoD Warzone into the sewers. Live service games truly do justice to classic kaiju.

In 2022, Warzone released Operation Monarch, which witnessed 60 players battle on Caldera at the same time when legendary Titans Kong and Godzilla stomped across Caldera. When these rival titans were first introduced to CoD, the initial thrills wore off, as they quickly devolved into hollow caricatures that did not live up to destructive titans.

These two beasts never really felt like an imposing threat: sure, Godzilla occasionally blasted his wayward atomic breath onto the shores of Caldera, while Kong mopped a few players unceremoniously underfoot – but you were still more likely to be killed by a gang of other players than at the hands (or claws) of the mighty creatures. On top of that, they never directly fought: they just strolled around the island, taking in the sights and yelling at each other like drunken dudes in a parking lot. As one could imagine, that did not sit well with the CoD contingent, many of whom went into it with sky-high expectations.

So when it was revealed that the King of Monsters would walk into Fortnite, it felt like Monsterverse fans had their second chance at seeing their cherished kaiju get the battlefield justice they richly deserved. And, generally speaking, Fortnite achieved what, in this case, Call of Duty couldn’t do.

CoD is left in the dust by the Fortnite Godzilla event

Fortnite's new Godzilla Mode.

Fortnite’s Godzilla gameplay does not just remain idle; it is wild, absurd, and, more importantly, fun. After all, what’s worse than watching Godzilla lazily stomp across the map? Well, physically playing as Godzilla. Unlike CoD’s Operation Monarch festivity, there is one lucky player in every multiplayer game who can become the King of Monsters.

Even if you are not fortunate enough to land that role, just watching a player-controlled Godzilla demolish Sea Port City while various teams scramble to get away is as exhilarating to the heart of a Monsterverse follower as they come.

While he isn’t a playable character yet, Kong sometimes appears on the map to drop Monarch supply crates featuring items such as Rail Guns and Shield Bubbles. Although Godzilla can be taken down using bullets, some well-timed Rail Gunshots and plenty of Shield Bubbles can help tip the balance against this enormous monster. The player who deals the most damage to Godzilla will get the Godzilla Medallion impressive item that allows him to permanently dash.

To sweeten the pot, you will also receive the destruction-fest Burst Quad Launcher-good for getting rid of opposing players and vehicles. Therefore, while you can just avoid Godzilla altogether or wait for his elimination timer to run out, there is really a lot of incentive in playing as the monster and also in taking him down.

While certain complaints hover around Godzilla’s spawn rate, Fortnite’s recent live event deserves a triumphant roar on its own, one from which other live-service games could benefit when incorporating Godzilla’s IP.
